Spring Organizing

It’s spring let’s get to organizing and clearing our workspaces and homes.  Question is where do we start? 

Organizing is more than just an act of clearing your space, it also declutters your mind.  I don’t know about you but I seem to get really annoyed , and overwhelmed around clutter.  I start by getting mad at the clutter, then mad that I can’t work effectively because of the clutter, then mad at myself for causing the clutter and needless to say it is a vicious circle of blame and annoyance. 

Here are some tips to decluttering, organizing and getting back some level of sanity from HGTV: 

1. Invest in adequate furniture.
 Make sure your office furniture provides ample space for work and storage.2. Establish activity centers.
The efficient office should be zoned into activity areas:

  • The Work Center, which includes a clear workspace, the computer and frequently used office products.  
  • The Reference Center, which includes binders, manuals, dictionary and professional books and materials.  
  • The Supply Center, which contains office and paper supplies.

  

3. Properly place the hardware and peripherals. 

  • Position your equipment by frequency of use. If the printer is used daily, it should be within easy reach. If the CPU is only accessed for troubleshooting, it can be placed under or next to the desk. If a scanner is rarely used, it can be placed outside the work area.  
  • When setting up hardware, be conscious of access to drives, trays and cords. Don’t block access to drawers or take up leg room with tangled

Effectiveness

One of my goals for this year was to enhance my awareness through various resources.  A book that I have always wanted to read is Stephen Covey’s “7  Habits of Highly Effective People“.  Well I opted to get the audio book from the library.  It allows me to do my housework, and other work while listening.  I am so glad that I got this book and I haven’t even finished it.  I know now that I will have to buy this book as it should be a resource book in everyone’s life.

I would like to share some points that Covey mentioned on effectiveness.

Effective:  Getting what you want and getting what you want in a way that allows you to duplicating your results over and over again.

His formula to achieve effectiveness is having a PPC balance.

P – Production                   PC- Production Control

When applied in business this would mean not only being concerned so much with what is being produced, but also who is helping you produce.  If you owned a restaurant and you were merely concerned with how many people are being served in a certain amount of time and you have no concern for your server, you have arrived at a PPC imbalance.  When the capacity of the asset to produce becomes ineffective you have a  PPC imbalance.  

I want to be a great boss and You have to do all you can to maintain a balance or you will reduce  effectiveness.  Covey talked about the body, sometimes we run and run, eat poorly, get no excercise and wonder why we experience a body that does not function as it should.

Something that came to mind when I was listening was blogging.  We worry about producing , making sure that we post frequently yet is possible to be so eager to produce a post that you may not produce effective content.  Taking time to read, read other blogs, stop to just breath, review our goals and passions will give us the renewed strength that we need to have an effective blog.

Sassy interview with Cara Retz

Today’s interview is with Cara Retz who sellss Discovery Toys.

 

 

 

How and when did you get started with this business?  I grew up on Discovery Toys and LOVED playing with them when I was younger. When my first son was born, I hosted a Discovery Toys party. At the time, I did not become a consultant, but in March of 2007, I had the opportunity to become a consultant. So, I decided to join. For the first 2 years, I didn’t do much (just enough to stay “active”). Then in February of 2009, I met someone from another company and she inspired me to join a team in my area. I did and ever since, my business has grown and grown.

Who or what inspired you to begin this business? I wanted to have a home based business so that I would be able to stay at home with my boys and be able to contribute to the household income.

What has been the most difficult aspect of this business for you? The most difficult thing for me is picking up the phone and making phone calls. Phone calls to book parties, hostess coach, customer service or any other types of calls.

Where do you sell your items? I have a website you can order from or you can call or email me with an order. I also have a blog that you can check out that features Discovery Toys products as well as how you can help your child play. I will set up booths at events such as craft shows and conferences. But, the place I sell the most is through home parties. They are always a lot of fun when you get to be together with some women and play.

What has been the most fabulous aspect of this business for you? So far, the most fabulous thing I’ve gotten from my business are the friendships I’ve made. I have met some amazing women through Discovery Toys that I probably would not have had the chance to meet.

Another great thing is working on making myself a better person. I am able to face fears that I have and work on overcoming them. And feel a sence of accomplishment through it.

Where do you see yourself in the next 2 months? A year?  In the next 2 months, my goal is to become Team Leader. I need to work on building a strong team under me. In a year, my goal is to be on the incentive trip that I have the chance to earn. It is a trip to Costa Rica. I would love to be able to take this trip with my husband.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things would you desperately miss? 

First and foremost, I would miss my family. They are everything to me and I love spending time with them.

Second, I would miss my friends. I would miss being able to hang out and have a good time with them.

Third, I would miss my bed. I love sleeping in my bed. It’s so nice and comfy.

Fourth, I would miss being able to do my craft projects. I enjoy doing crafty things.

Fifth, I would miss chocolate. I enjoy indulging in a good piece of chocolate.

Business Grants for Women

Here is some informations provided by Investing in Women regarding business grants. Hope that this will be beneficial to you.  Be sure to pass the information to other women.

Business Grants are elusive to most entrepreneurs and especially hard to find in a recession.  Investing In Women wants to change that and is asking for everyone to get involved in awarding grants.  After awarding their first grant a few weeks ago, the company is ready to award another one.

 

 The current grant applicant is Gazelle Simmons, a virtual assistant and author.  She started her business Admin Services in 1998 and is currently in need of a new computer. “The desktop computer I’m currently using was purchased in February 2005…It is an essential part of my business and I couldn’t work without it.”  Gazelle wrote in her grant application.  As a virtual assistant she works with business owners who need administrative support but not a full-time employee. Her services include, but are not limited to presentations, data entry, mass-mailings and editing/proofreading.

 

 Gazelle lives in Atlanta, GA with her two teenage daughters.  She is active in her community and spends her free time volunteering. After 10 years as an executive administrator she became her own boss so she would have the time to care for her aging parents.  “I could be available for my parents, children even friends and family while still doing work I loved.  For the first time in years, I looked forward to working.” says Gazelle

 

 With the new grant program, everyone gets a chance to be involved. Investing In Women will begin the grant with $25 and the remainder will be donated through the site by visitors and from paid advertisements. All grant donors will receive recognition on the site with their name or website link.

 

“This gives us more transparency in our grant process and allows others to do something positive for a small business owner.” says Leah Oviedo, founder of Investing In Women. “Our goal is to offer 100 micro-grants in the next 2 years. After this grant is awarded we will be awarding another and so on.”

 

 Investing In Women was founded in February of 2009 with the goal of encouraging women to be financially independent. They offer free business resources and tools that can be used by all entrepreneurs, not just women.  Set up like a co-op, members of the site contribute their knowledge and resources on different business subjects.  In exchange they receive free advertising.
